What French did I learn today…Post 1

Just a quick what I learnt today regarding french. I’ll be posting shortly, regarding why I’m blogging about french. But in the mean time know that the healthy scientist aims to get fluent in french/to a very high standard by Jan 1st 2021 (achievable goals) the earlier the better but I believe this is acgievable if I fully immerse myself in the language and take lessons, modules at university and posses intermediate level knowledge of french (a weak intermediate french speaker I would say).

I think these posts will not only keep me accountable but motivate others to also hold themselves accountable for whatever goals they have. And hopefully, if you are learning a languag eand it’s not french it can give you some ideas for some resources to look into getting.

First, I reminded myself of the numbers on page 32 and 33 of my 15 minute french book. I looked at some meeting vocabulary from the same book

Then, I translated news in french on the app called NewsInShowFrancepodcast

Then I watched 3 french youtube videos from french vogue because I’m pretty into fashion

Vocab/numbers/other phrases and questions I noted

  • quatre vingt = 80
  • un million = a million
  • dix mille = ten thousand

Time

  • une heure = one clock
  • une heure cinq = five past one
  • une heure et quatre = quarter past one
  • deux heures moins le quart = quarter to two
  • deux heures moins dix = ten to two
  • Quelle heure est-il? = What time is it?
  • A quelle heure voulez vous le petit déjeuner? = What time do you want breakfast?

Appointments (a section in one of the books i’m using)

Prenons rendez- vous pour demain = Lets meet tomorrow

quand êtes- vous libre? = when are you free?

je suis occupe(e) = I’m sorry/I’m busy *please note the first e has an accent

A quatre heure, si c’est bon pour vous = At four if that’s ok for you

mais je suis un peu en retard = but I’m a little late

Ne vous inquiétez pas. Asseyez-vous, je vous en prie = Don’t worry. Sit down. Please

Some other cools apps I found. The first is french actualities i.e french news and the second is radio France. I haven’t tried them out but my plan is to no longer look at the news in english, only in french so as to force myself to read it.

Another good tip, even though this isn’t a tip and tricks post is to change the setting of your phone to the language which you wish to learn and again this gives you extra daily exposure to said language, you learn lots of vocab and hey maybe it will confuse/ deter any thieves from stealing your phonier at least keeping a hold of it because there’s a high probability they themselves won’t be trying to become fluent in french or mandarin. Or maybe, that’s a silly ideas, here’s to hoping 🙂

I would also recommend, finding a way to practice ones french verbally as i’m very aware all the practice I have done today has been very non verbal (reading and listening)

If anyone out there is trying to get fluent in french and has any other resources or groups, for example on facebook or WhatsApp, please do let me know. It would definitely make the whole experience a lot easier and having others around you to practice with who can also support one another is invaluable.

I would happily buddy up with anyone here on my blog or even create a little community if enogh people show interest. I’ll look into ones already avaliable as I’m sure there are some.

Thanks for reading and here’s to hoping at some point I’ll have the confidence to write this all in french.

Au revoir!
