I was watching these amazing documentaries on refinery 29 on the secret behind cosmetic products. One about a cosmetology programme in some prisons in America and they were very very good. Well put together, great delivery and there was clearly an immense amount of research and thought leaving me compelled to blog about them. In the hope that you will not only watch them and become more aware about the injustices occurring around us everyday but also so that we can all become more conscious, strive to never be the perpetrators of such atrocities and do our bit to help.
The first video I watched revelealed the horrific inhumane treatment of teh inmates at one prison in the US by the guards. Sexual misconduct, abuse of power, dehumanisation, bullying and abuse. Not to mention the complete disregard to the basic human rights of the women.
With holding basic necessities such as loo roll and sanitary products in exchange for sexual favours and flirting. Physical and emotional abuse and the list continues. Truly horrific, and eye opening. Although, I do not live in the US I will do my best to find the petitions, send emails etc to try and help solve this issue and I will share this with you all asap.
The second video made me cry and multiple times. It was truly awful. It was the prime example of how huge multinational giants extort third world countries and underpay and endanger these people in return for huge profit margins. The video showed how children as young as 5 would mine in very dangerous and scary conditions for Mica a mineral used in cosmetics, cement, asphalt and insulation. It also poses health issues as it is unsafe to inhale.
One girl told the journalist how she watched her sister die as a boulder fell on top of her. She also showed her scars from the accident. The children also repeatedly explained how frightening and dangerous there job was but that it was their only option in order to not go hungry. Truly heart breaking.
You can watch the videos below for all the information and to truly understand the depth of this issue. And as I have mentioned I will be posting information on what we can do and what has already been done in due course.
